Bursitis - The Working Class Enemy
By Kelly Sons

Every movement you make requires a muscle tendon to move over a bone. This would cause immeasurable friction and pain if not for tiny, fluid filled sacks called bursa. Bursa are scattered all over the body and are likened to small sandwich baggies filled with an oily fluid, devoid of any air. Placed between to surfaces rubbing together, the bursa facilitates the movement into slick, easy motions. Bursitis is the swelling and inflammation of the bursa.

What are the symptoms of bursitis?

Imagine a carpet layer on his hands and knees all day, every day. He puts constant pressure in his knees and wrists. Eventually this will cause pain in the joints around his knees and wrists. Or think of a painter. Someone who constantly has her arm raised above her head, over and over all day, will begin to experience pain in the neck and shoulder. The most common symptoms of bursitis are joint pain and stiffness in the areas that you move most. The pain is most severe during the activity that engages the affected muscles most. The pain will linger as a sore ache even after the activity.

What causes bursitis?

traumatic bursitisMany people whose jobs consist of the same type of repetitive movements sometimes begin to feel pain in the places where their tendons rub over the bone. Bursitis occurs when a muscle is used over and over and it becomes coarse. It will eventually cause the bursa to become inflamed. The inflammation of the bursa causes it to loose its slickness and the gliding of the muscle is made much harder. Instead of a soft, effortless glide the movement will feel rough and gritty. The confined space between the muscles and the bursa becomes even smaller and the inflammation causes a friction in movement.

What are the treatments of bursitis?

face=Arial size=2>Anti-inflammatory drugs are most successful in treating bursitis. It is also necessary to support and brace the tendons that are affected by the bursitis. If the condition was caused by prolonged and extreme pressure on an area such as with a carpet layer continuously staying on his knees, it becomes necessary for him to use knee pads and extra protection. If the condition arises from the repetitive movement of reaching over one's head, a step or elevation of some kind is important. Products like MedGen's PAINenz have been found to reduce the pain of bursitis. The roll-on, topical pain reliever contains capsaicin, a proven effective pain reducer. Bursitis prevention

In order to prevent bursitis the muscles must be stretched regularly. This lengthens the bursa/bone connection. Regularly resting the bursa/bone connection during strenuous activity also helps in the prevention of bursitis.

Bursitis can be prevented and treated accurately by researching the condition and educating yourself about its symptoms and causes.
